Can you help The Hive with it's Christmas Challenge....?!
The Hive, Wirral Youth Zone is taking part in a national fundraising initiative called “The Big Give – Christmas Challenge”, and we need to gain as much public support as possible to achieve our ambitious £12,500 fundraising target.
“The Big Give” is a non-profit, charitable website which enables donors to find and support charity projects in their field of interest. They run an annual “Christmas Challenge” from Tuesday 28th November at midday until Tuesday 5th December at midday, and any donations made via their website during this time will be doubled!!
The project we have put forward is called “Mentoring For Young People”, and we have set ourselves an overall fundraising target of £25k to support a Volunteer Mentoring programme at The Hive which will benefit some of the most vulnerable and disaffected young people in Wirral by tackling issues such as bullying, self-esteem, self-harm and the effects of family breakdown. The need for more one-to-one support has been identified by our young people as a priority area, and with the sheer volume of young people now attending The Hive, this is something that we require further support for in order to meet this need.
The Hive is only the 8th Youth Zone in the UK, and the first one in Merseyside. Wirral is a Borough of contrasts with some very affluent ward areas, and ward areas that experience real deprivation - nearly 25% of Wirral young people live in child poverty. Although we target the hardest to reach young people, all young people in Wirral aged 8-19 (or up to 25 for those with a learning difficulty and/or disability) can attend The Hive. We have 200-300 young people attending each session, enjoying a choice of up to 20 different activities. The Hive is open all year round, every weekday after school, Bank Holidays and weekends.
Essentially, Youth Zones are £6m buildings, designed specifically for young people to give them a fantastic, modern and welcoming space that offers a host of sports, arts, recreational, employment and enterprise activities. The Hive not only provides a creative and enjoyable space for young people, but also enables them to develop the skills and self-confidence that are essential to their future training and employment prospects.
Our Youth Zone opened in April this year with an ambitious target to have 3000 members by April next year, and our membership now stands at over 6200 young people! If you can spare a couple of minutes today, then please take a look at our brief video here. The Hive has been named by local young people, and they have been intrinsically involved in the project from the outset, so that what we are creating in Wirral reflects their desire to have ‘somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to’.
Our target is to raise £12,500 of donations for our project via The Big Give website….and every online donation of £5 and over will be doubled, until we have reached the £12,500 target. In effect this means that the project could receive £25k of funding – as long as we achieve £12,500 of support during “Christmas Challenge” week.
As we are still such a new charity we need as much help as possible in securing support and highlighting this fundraising initiative to the wider Wirral (and beyond!) community. We would therefore be deeply grateful if you would share this information with any one you think might want to support us during Christmas Challenge week.
N.B. Only donations made to our project from Tuesday 28th November at midday until Tuesday 5th December at midday will be doubled.
